The Grey Mountain Cave
On a beautiful, sunny, fall day, there’s nothing quite like a walk up to and along the top of a Whitehorse-area mountain. Grey Mountain is a local favourite since it’s possible to drive nearly all t
he way to the top and, when you get to the top, the walking is superb.
A few families on a hike with several kids in tow, we never made it to the top of the mountain. Instead, we opted for a much more challenging hike to a lesser-known feature on Grey Mountain – a cave.
The trail up to the cave is steep and probably isn’t one you’ll want to attempt unless you have kids that teem with boundless energy. Which I don’t.
That didn’t stop us from going, though. Don’t worry if you give it a try and never make it to the cave; the views are tremendous – especially on a gorgeous fall day when the colours are out in full force!
Fortunately – in spite of certain tired, whining children – we made it to the cave. The cave is located about halfway up a limestone wall. It’s a bit of a climb to get into the cave and although there is a rope to help on the way up and down, trying to get in with small children is not recommended. Do as I say and not as I do, okay?*
If the kids you’re traveling with want to go inside, just tell them that an evil, mean ogre with three thousand teeth, fourteen eyes, and orange boogers dripping from his nose lives inside and eats little children for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Really, though, there’s no ogre but they don’t need to know that. Instead, there’s a geocache and a visitor’s log book inside.
*This climb was made by trained professionals using specialized safety equipment (not pictured). Do not attempt.
